Directed by Garth Davis, with Rooney Mara in the titular role comes upcoming movie Mary Magdalene, aiming to give an “authentic and humanistic portrait of one of the most enigmatic and misunderstood spiritual figures in history”. This week, a fantastic trailer for the film has been released, which you can now check out below:

Also starring Joaquin Phoenix, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Tahar Rahim, the film puts Mary front-and-centre, as she defies the traditions of her family and joins a new social movement led by a man known only as Jesus of Nazareth (Phoenix). Finding a place for herself there and finally feeling like she’s found her purpose in life, Mary goes on a journey that leads to Jerusalem, putting in place some of the most famous happenings in all of history.

Ejiofor takes on the role of Peter in the film, with Rahim as Judas Iscariot and Ryan Corr stepping into the shoes of Joseph.

The film itself is written by Helen Edmundson and Philipa Goslett, with Iain Canning, Emile Sherman and Liz Watts all serving as producers. Ute Leonhardt and Marco Valerio Pugini are also credited as line producers.

Originally set to be distributed by The Weinstein Company in the US and Canada, those behind the film brought the deal to an abrupt end when the allegations surrounding Harvey Weinstein started to make headlines. Now, Sony Pictures will be handling US and Canadian distribution, with Universal Pictures looking after the movie in the UK.

Mary Magdalene comes to cinemas across the UK on March 16, 2018.
