Borenstein and director Gareth Edwards brought Godzilla back to the big screen last year and the movie went on to be a summer box office smash.

There has been talk of a sequel for some time and now Borenstein has revealed that he is already working on the screenplay for the upcoming movie. And the screenwriter is incredibly excited about what lies ahead for the franchise.

Speaking to Collider at the 2015 Television Critics Association press tour, Borenstein said: "No, I'm doing it. I'm writing it now, and it's really going to be great.

"I don't want to go off book and tell you anything that I'm not allowed to tell you. The response to the first film was really exciting, but now that that world is established, we can do bigger and even better things. We're really stoked."

Edwards will also be returning to the franchise in the director's chair but it has not yet been announced if any of the cast from the first film will been making an appearance.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Bryan Cranston, and Elizabeth Olsen led the cast of the first film, which went on to gross in excess of $528 million at the global box office by the end of its theatrical run.

Since the success of Godzilla back in 2014, Borenstein has gone on to write the script for the Minority Report television series as well as the screenplay for Kong: Skull Island.

Kong: Skull Island is set to be an origins story for the iconic character King Kong and casting for the movie is currently underway. Tom Hiddleston is one board but Samuel L Jackson has been linked to the movie in the last week.

Godzilla 2 is released 18th June 2018.
