'Transformers 4' is a "definitive step away" from the previous trilogy.

Up-and-coming Irish actor Jack Reynor - who will have a starring role in Michael Bay's forthcoming blockbuster - revealed that the next installment in the alien robot franchise will take the movie series in a new direction.

Discussing his initial meetings with the director, he told The Hollywood Reporter: "All I knew was basically, Michael was going to make 'Transformers 4' and we were going to chat about me being in it. We didn't chat about making a fourth or any of the motives behind it. But personally, I think there's a lot more to be done with it.

"There's a whole new direction to take it in, and a lot more to explore in that universe, and I think we're going to make a definitive step away from the previous movies, and this is going to be a lot of fun and I'm incredibly excited."

Reynor will join a brand new cast led by 'Ted' star Mark Wahlberg and 'Bates Motel' actress Nicola Peltz as his daughter, but the movie won't be a complete reboot, the film's director insists.

Bay recently said: "It's a totally different story. It's with Mark Wahlberg and his daughter.

"It's the same world. You have the three movies, but there's a reason why there's a new cast. And it's explained very clearly when you see it, and it's going to feel natural. So it's not like we're starting over or anything like that."
