Minions has become the fourth film in 2015 to break the $1 billion barrier.

Minions

Over the weekend, Minions, which is the first solo film for these popular characters, became the first animation movie to achieve this feat this year.

Minions followed in the footsteps of Jurassic World, Fast & Furious 7, and Avengers: Age of Ultron to become the fourth highest grossing film of the year so far.

It was back in 2010 when we were introduced to the minions for the first time as they appeared alongside villain Gru in Despicable Me. They returned three years later when the sequel hit the big screen.

Minions marks the first time we have seen them since the success of Despicable Me 2 two years ago, and it seems that they are as popular as ever.

The movie marked the return of Pierre Coffin, who directed both Despicable Me films, and he teamed up with Kyle Balda for the first time to helm the film.

Sandra Bullock, Jon Hamm, Michael Keaton, Allison Janney, Steve Coogan, and Jennifer Saunders made up a terrific voice cast for the popular film.

The success of Minions rumbles on and we could potentially see the film put Age of Ultron under a little bit of pressure. The second Avengers film grossed $1,401 billion earlier this year - we will have to wait and see if Minions gets close to that total.

Universal have had a terrific year as Minions becomes the third film to gross over $1 billion for the studio - we have already seen Jurassic World and Fast & Furious 7 bring in the cash.

It has been a great year at the box office so far and there's the potential for movies such as Spectre, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 and Star Wars: The Force Awakens to also join the $1 billion club.
