Women empowerment is a thing to behold, with more and more films focusing their plots on a group of capable and fierce ladies, such as upcoming female-led film Gunpowder Milkshake, starring Karen Gillan.

On August 27th, 2021, we can expect to see the wonderful tale of Our Ladies, developed from the 1998 book The Sopranos by Alan Warner. The novel follows a group of Scottish Catholic schoolgirls who travel to the big city to take part in a choir contest.

When they arrive, the girls immediately take the opportunity to let their hair down and enjoy being away from their dull and bleak lives.

It seems that the film, with the title changed to Our Ladies, will follow the novel; a group of Catholic schoolgirls from Scotland head into Edinburgh to compete in a choir competition. For this group of Catholic teenagers, the journey to the city is a vast change from their Highland lives; they don’t miss the chance to explore and have some fun in this new and exciting city.

The girls simply want to run riot, act how they can’t act at home, and experience life outside their banal and uninteresting lives.

With little hope for what their futures may hold, Orla (Tallulah Greive), Finnoula (Abigail Lawrie), Manda (Sally Messham), Kay (Eve Austin), Chell (Rona Morison) and Kylah (Marli Siu) are determined to have fun while they can, and enjoy life properly.

The trailer gives us a wonderful look at the upcoming film, and shows the main characters in love with one another in a circle of support and love during their crazy exploits in Edinburgh.

The girls are introduced one by one and we’re given a little information about each of the main characters. While being different in some ways, the ladies share the need to let their hair down, be themselves, and really explore what life can be like – together.

We see the group of friends immediately break out of their shells and their personalities shine through; they drink, they kiss boys, and most of all, they find who they are in the big city; they know who they are and who they want to be. It will certainly be a tale of incredible female self-discovery.

We see the family of friends in a state of power, in that they can finally escape the irksomeness of their lives and break free to love life, all while remaining in their tight-knit group of supporting and fearsome ladies.

Our Ladies will be in cinemas on August 27th this year (2021)!
