We were almost introduced to a new Guardian in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2, according to director James Gunn.

Gunn is back in the director's chair for the highly anticipated Marvel sequel, which will hit the big screen next year, and has also penned the film's screenplay.

The filmmaker has revealed that a new Guardian was going to be introduced but was cut due to there being too many characters.

Answering fan questions on Facebook, the director revealed: "Yes. In my initial treatment I had a whole other Guardian involved. I loved the character and loved including him/her, and thought my take was fun.

"But I started to feel that there were two many characters in the story and for all of the characters to get their due, I needed to remove one. So this character left, and Mantis stayed."

However, Gunn did not go on to reveal which character he was going to introduce and it may be someone we meet further down the line.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 sees Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, and Bradley Cooper reprise the roles of Peter Quill. Gamora, Draz, Groot and Rocket. We are also going to see Karen Gillan and Michael Rooker reprise their roles as Nebula and Yondu.

While we won't get a new Guardian there are some big new additions to the cast list as Elizabeth Debicki, Sylvester Stallone, Pom Klementieff, and Kurt Russell are on board.

Stallone's role has not yet been announced by Debicki will play Ayesha, Klementieff is on board as Mantis, and Russell will take on the role of Ego, Peter Quill's father.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 was one of the big movies at Comic-Con earlier this summer, where fans were given a sneak peek at the first footage from the film.

It will be the first of three Marvel movies to be released next year and will be followed by Spider-Man: Homecoming and Thor: Ragnarok.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 is released 28th April 2017.
