Cate Blanchett is one of the greatest actresses of her generation and is someone who truly lights up the big screen with any and every role that she tackles.

Carol

She is set to return this autumn with her new film Carol, a movie that has already been met with critical acclaim - as has Blanchett's performance in the title role.

In fact, it looks like Blanchett is surging ahead as the favourite for the Best Actress Oscar; was she to win, it would be her third Oscar and her second for Best Actress.

Carol is one of the autumn movies that we are looking forward to the most as it promises to be a powerful love story with Todd Haynes back in the director's chair. The brand new trailer for the film has arrived and we have it for you to take a look at:

Carol is based on the novel by Patricia Highsmith and has been adapted for the big screen by Phyllis Nagy. This is the first feature film for Haynes since I'm Not There and he reunites with Blanchett for the first time since that Bob Dylan inspired film.

However, Carol is not all about Blanchett, as Rooney Mara has also been winning acclaim for her performance as Therese Belivet. This could be an Oscar winning turn from Mara should she be nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category. It would be a shame to see both of them nominated for Best Actress and have to go head to head.

Sarah Paulson and Kyle Chandler complete the talented and exciting cast list.

A young woman in her 20s, Therese Belivet (Mara) is a clerk working in a Manhattan department store and dreaming of a more fulfilling life when she meets Carol (Blanchett), an alluring woman trapped in a loveless, convenient marriage. As an immediate connection sparks between them, the innocence of their first encounter dims and their connection deepens.

While Carol breaks free from the confines of marriage, her husband (Chandler) threatens her competence as a mother when Carol's involvement with Therese and close relationship with her best friend Abby (Paulson) comes to light. As Carol leaves the comfort of home to travel with Therese, an internal journey of self-discovery coincides with her new sense of space.

Carol will receive its UK premiere at the BFI London Film Festival in October and is set to be one of the autumn movies that's not to be missed.

Carol is released 27th November.
