Premiering to brilliant reactions at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, Mudbound is the ambitious new Netflix original movie from director and co-writer Dee Rees, also known for their work on Pariah and Bessie. Check out a new trailer for the flick below:

Two families are pitted against one another in Mudbound, with the backdrop of rural Southern America during the Second World War plastering itself around proceedings. With a ruthless and unjust social hierarchy in place, the families will find themselves bound to one another because of the shared farmland of the Mississippi Delta.

The McAllan family are one of the two warring factions, having been uprooted from their quiet life in Memphis and been left unprepared for the harsh demands that farm life will bestow upon them.

Though Henry (Jason Clarke) has some big dreams, his wife Laura (Carey Mulligan) struggles to maintain positive, seeing the cracks in her husband’s failing venture.

Sharecroppers Hap and Florence Jackson (Rob Morgan, Mary J. Blige) meanwhile have known the land for generations, but struggle on to build a dream of their own despite being pushed back by social barriers time and time again.

When their loved ones Jamie McAllan (Garrett Hedlund) and Ronsel Jackson (Jason Mitchell) make their return from the war, forging an uneasy friendship, the realities of the areas of which they live are challenged, but this will be one of the greatest battles the two families have ever faced.

Mudbound launches on Netflix and in select movie theatres on Friday, November 17.
