Despite 2022 only being two weeks in as of today (January 14th, 2022), there has already been so much news regarding new TV and film releases, including a forthcoming release that sees Mikey (Simon Rex) return to a town where no one really wants him...

Red Rocket is Rex’s newest cinematic venture that follows a washed-up adult film star who makes his way back to his Texan hometown; however, nobody there really cares that he’s returned.

The daring new movie comes from writer/director Sean Baker (The Florida Project, Tangerine) and is an energetic, live-wire performance combined with a dark, humorous and raw representation of a unique American hustler, and a town that only just tolerates him (if that).

The trailer for Red Rocket sees Mikey go for job after job, with no success. It seems that returning home after a long stretch of time, specifically 17 years, doesn’t result in the homecoming he expected; especially after admitting to potential employers that he was formerly a member of the adult film industry.

However, Mikey manages to get his old job back selling pot, and decides to celebrate at a local donut shop. He becomes smitten with Strawberry (Suzanna Son), a 17-year-old cashier who he finds very attractive.

Mikey, not breaking a habit of a lifetime, returns to the shop time and time again, and convinces the young girl to allow him to sell drugs to the construction workers who frequent the donut shop; he and Strawberry then begin a sexual relationship.

After causing Strawberry to break up with her high-school boyfriend, and being beaten to within an inch of his life, Mikey tries to convince Strawberry to come with him to Los Angeles to pursue a career he knows more than a little about...

Red Rocket appears to be one of those unique films that combines the hardship of life with comedy that has been placed perfectly.

The movie has already received a whole host of positive reviews, with Film calling it “An absolute blast”, Variety stating the movie to be “One of the best films of the year”, and Vanity Fair complementing Rex’s performance, calling the actor “Sensational”.

Red Rocket will be in cinemas on March 11th, 2022.
