Smith is set to take on the role of the film's villain in the directorial debut by Gosling, which is the biggest movie role of Smith's acting career to date.

And Gosling says that it was Smith's commanding role in Doctor Who that convinced him that he would be perfect for the role in Lost River.

Speaking at a Q&A screening at London's Curzon Soho cinema, the director said: "One day I was watching TV. I heard Matt Smith's voice coming at me. It was Doctor Who and there was an episode where he was in a car screaming at these aliens and telling them where to go. Like a boss. Just telling all these spaceships what was what.

"As an actor I know that's pretty hard to do, because I'm pretty sure those spaceships weren't there. I thought, 'Who is this guy?'

"There's no-one like him. He's like one of those actors from the Seventies, just themselves and nobody else. I said, 'I have to work with that guy.' So I tracked him down."

Smith has a very busy movie year ahead of him as he will also be starring in Terminator Genisys and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.

Lost River is the first time that we have seen Smith on the big screen since Clone. having focused on his commitments to Doctor Who.

Smith is part of an all-star cast in Lost River as Christina Hendricks, Iain De Caestecker, Saoirse Ronan, Ben Mendelsohn, and Eva Mendes are all also on board.

Lost River is out now.
