Sandra Bullock says that she wanted an androgynous look for her character in new movie Gravity.

The actress is set to team up with George Clooney and director Alfonso Cuaron for new science fiction film Gravity, which was premiered at the Venice Film Festival last night.

And Bullock revealed that she worked hard on the physical aspect of the character in order to get under her skin.

Speaking to Digital Spy the actress said: "The physical aspects were two-fold - one was the core physicality which I needed in order to execute the wire work that was being done, and thank God I did that.

"The other side was what I wanted her to look like, or not look like, as a human being. She had experienced great tragedy, and a loss no-one should ever feel, which was the loss of a child.

"I wanted her to look as though she's trying to do everything she can to remove anything that would remind her of what she once was, which was a mum. I wanted the body to look almost androgynous."

The first reviews for Gravity have been overwhelmingly positive as the film opened the Venice film festival last night.

The movie is already being tipped as an possible Oscar contender, and is set to be one of the must see sci-fi films of the autumn.

Gravity is released November 8th.
