The role will be the second outing for the 21-year-old actress in a film adaptation of a best-selling novel from English writer Ian McEwan.

The Irish star first appeared as Briony, who was the jealous sister of Keira Knightley's Cecilia Tallis in McEwan's 'Atonement' in 2007 and she received her first Oscar nomination for her performance.

'On Chesil Beach' follows newly married couple Florence and Edward during their honeymoon in Dorset in the 1960s and is a tale of their enlightening journey of love.

Saoirse will play Florence, who voices her concerns about the wedding night, whilst her husband has his own insecurities regarding their flourishing relationship.

The male lead is yet to be cast but shooting on the project will begin later this year.

The film will be produced by Number 9 Films' Stephen Woolley and Elizabeth Karlsen - who also co-produced Oscar nominated movie 'Carol' - and Dominic Cooke will make his debut in the director's seat.

Karlsen previously worked with Saoirse on 2012 film 'Byzantium', a drama also set in a remote coastal location, and she is thrilled to be reunited with the star.

She said: "It's an extremely exciting prospect to be reunited with Saoirse Ronan on such a beautiful and heartbreaking project."
