Star Trek Beyond is the third film in the rebooted franchise and the first since Star Trek Into Darkness back in 2013.

The film will see Pegg reprise his role as Scotty, but he has also teamed up with Doug Jung to pen the film's screenplay.

Speaking to The Guardian, Pegg said: "[It felt like a] terrifying responsibility, whether it comes across as keenly as we wanted it with all the whiz-bangs of a big science-fiction movie.

"But what we wanted to do was to question the idea of the original vision of it. Gene Roddenberry's original idea of the Federation was like a UN in space. We wanted to ask whether it was a good thing or more like a colonising force."

While Pegg is no stranger to writing, with the likes of The World's End, Paul, Run Fatboy Run, and Hot Fuzz already under his belt, this is the first time that he has penned a Star Trek screenplay.

The movie sees Pegg reunite with Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Antony Yelchin, and John Chu as they reprise their roles as Kirk, Spock, Uhura, Bones, Chekov, and Sulu.

However, it is all change in the director's chair as Justin Lin takes over from J.J. Abrams for the first time.

It is going to be a busy summer for Pegg, who is also returning to the Ice Age franchise to voice the character of Buck in Collision Course; it will be his third Ice Age movie.

The actor has also completed work on Terminal and is set to star in Ready Player One, which is the latest film for Steven Spielberg. The movie is based on the novel of the same name and is currently in pre-production.

Mark Rylance, Ben Mendelsohn, T.J. Miller, Tye Sheridan, and Olivia Cooke will join Pegg on the cast list.

Star Trek Beyond is released 22nd July.
