Star Trek Into Darkness has topped the U.S. box office and toppled Iron Man 3 from the top spot.

The movie took a whopping $70 million in it's opening weekend to fly straight in at number one - it was also the only new entry in the top ten this week.

Star Trek Into Darkness is the second film in J.J. Abrams' rebooted franchise and the first since 2009.

Iron Man 3 slipped just a single place to two this week as it grossed a further $35.1 million. By the end of last week the movie had made over $1 billion and is comfortably the biggest grossing movie o2013 so far.

The Great Gatsby and Pain & Gain were both also down a single place this week at three and four.

The Croods continues to enjoy huge success and it was back in the top five this week as it was up two places.

The Croods has grossed in excess of $550 million at the global box office and there are already plans for a sequel.

42 and Oblivion were both down a single place at six and seven while there was no move for Mud at eight.

Peeples was the biggest faller this week as it was down five places from four to nine. The Big Wedding rounded off the top ten having dropped just a single place from last week's number nine.
