The D.C. comic movie, which as come in for heavy criticism from critics, grossed a further $20.7 million to hold off the animated film and stay in the number one spot.

The movie has now grossed over $572 million at the global box office and is on course to be one of the highest-grossing movies of the year.

Sausage Party, which sees Greg Tiernan and Conrad Vernon in the director's chair, was also a none-mover as the adult animation film stayed put at number two.

War Dogs, which sees Miles Teller team up with Jonah Hill to tell this true story, was the highest new entry as the Todd Philips directed film opened at number three.

This is the first film for Philips since the release of The Hangover Part III back in 2013 and is also his first collaboration with Teller and Hill. The film grossed $14.3 million on its opening weekend and narrowly missed out on the number two spot.

Animated film Kubu and the Two Strings, which boasts the voice talents of Charlize Theron and Matthew McConaughey, opened at number four while Ben Hur was the third and final new entry at number five.

Ben Hur is a remake of the 1959 classic of the same name and marks the return of Timur Bekmambetov to the director's chair. Jack Huston takes on the title role and is joined on the cast list by Toby Kebbell and Morgan Freeman.

Pete's Dragon slipped out of the top five this week as it dropped three places to this week's number six. Comedy Bad Moms was down two at seven.

Jason Bourne was another movie that dropped out of the top five as the action film was this week's biggest faller; dropping four places from four to number eight.
