Taken 3

Taken 3

Taken 3 has stormed to the top of the UK box office in its opening weekend on release, taking an impressive £6.7 million to see off the challenge from musical Into The Woods.

Taken 3 and Into The Wood went head to head when they were both released on Friday and it is the action sequel that has comfortably come out on top. Liam Neeson is back in the lead role of Bryan Mills, who finds himself on the run after being accused of murder.

Taken 3 comes seven years after we were introduced to this character for the first time - yes it was back in 2008 when Taken was released - and the movie now tops both the U.S. and UK box office.

Into The Woods had to settle for second place this week as it opened in the UK with a £2.4 million gross - narrowly seeing off the challenge from biopic The Theory of Everything.

Into The Woods is based on the Stephen Sondheim Broadway musical and sees Meryl Streep, Johnny Depp, Emily Blunt, James Corden, Anna Kendrick, and Chris Pine on the cast list, while Rob Marshall is back in the director’s chair.

The Theory of Everything was down two places this week as it fell from one to three after just a single week as the UK’s #1 movie. However, it narrowly missed out on the number two spot as it grossed a further £2.46 million over the weekend.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies dropped two places from two to four, while Paddington rounded off the top five. Paddington continues to perform well at the UK box office but fell two places from last week’s number three.

Foxcatcher was the third and final new entry inside the top ten this week as it opened at number six. The movie sees Bennett Miller in the director’s chair, while Steve Carell, Channing Tatum, and Mark Ruffalo lead an exciting and all-star cast. The Woman in Black: Angel of Death fell out of the top five this week as it dropped from four to seven.

Birdman - which triumphed at the Golden Globes over the weekend winning Best Picture and Best Actor in the Musical or Comedy category - was down just one place at eight. Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb was this week’s biggest faller as it fell four spots from five to nine.

Annie rounded off the top ten this week as the musical fell two places from last week’s number eight.
