Tackling the role of Starr Carter in The Hate U Give, the brilliant Amandla Stenberg will be joined on the big screen later this year by Regina Hall, Russell Hornsby, Lamar Johnson, Issa Rae, Algee Smith, Sabrina Carpenter, K.J. Apa, Anthony Mackie and Common, in what looks to be one of the most stirring and impactful movies of 2018. This week, a fantastic trailer for the film has been released, which you can now check out below:

Based on the critically-acclaimed New York Times best-selling book of the same name by Angie Thomas, The Hate U Give sees Stenberg stepping into the role of Starr Carter; a young girl who toes the line of two separate worlds. In one, she resides in a mostly black neighbourhood, separated from other communities despite the modern world in which she resides. For her education however, she attends a mostly white prep school, and so is forced to balance between the utterly different scenarios each and every day.

Though she’s at peace with weaving between both worlds, that’s soon shattered when Starr’s childhood best friend Khalil (Algee Smith) is shot dead by a white police officer, forcing her to find her voice and stand up for her community. With friends on both sides of the fence, she’s encouraged by her loved ones to do her all to make things right, not just for Khalil, but for people of colour across the United States.

Extremely topical, The Hate U Give looks likely to bring incredibly relevant and important issues to the centre of discussions around the world. In the modern day, we shouldn’t have to rely on stories such as this to march us towards equality, but that’s the situation we find ourselves in. Keep on fighting for the greater good and together, we’ll find a solution to the bigotry that still runs rampant across the globe.

The Hate U Give comes to cinemas across the UK on November 2, 2018.
