The Martian, which sees Ridley Scott back in the director's chair and Matt Damon in the central role, took £6.5 million this weekend - making it the biggest UK opening since Inside Out back in July.

The movie is based on the book of the same name by Andy Weir and is already being tipped as a possible Oscar contender. It is the first time that we have seen Scott in the director's chair since Exodus: Gods and Kings last year.

Once again, Legend was a non-mover as the gangster film spent another week at number two. In four weeks the movie has grossed over £15.3 million at the UK box office and Tom Hardy's dual performance has been met with acclaim.

Everest was a two place faller this week as it dropped from the top spot to number three. The Intern was the second highest new entry as the Nancy Meyers comedy opened at number four. Meyers is back in the director's chair and on writing duties while Anne Hathaway teams up with Robert De Niro.

A third new entry rounded off the top five in the form of the critically acclaimed Macbeth. The movie is a new adaptation of the Shakespeare play and sees Michael Fassbender in the title role, while Marion Cotillard plays Lady Macbeth.

Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials dropped out of the top five for the first time as the adaptation slipped places from three to this week's number six. A live performance of Il Trovatore at the Met Opera was the fourth new entry at number seven.

Miss You Already was a four place faller this week as the touching comedy fell from four to number eight. Singh Is Bliing was the fifth and final new entry as it opened at number four.

Inside Out is the most successful original Pixar movie of all time at the UK box office but the animation film was this week's biggest faller. The movie slipped five places to round off this week's top ten.
