The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones

Jessica Postigo Paquette says that condensing the back-story was the most difficult aspect of adapting The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones.

This is the first of Cassandra Clare's novels to be adapted for the big screen as Harald Zwart returns to the director's chair.

City of Bones marks the debut screenplay for Postigo Paquette as she left her journalism job behind to pursue a career in film.

Speaking to Collider the screenwriter said: "There was a big back-story that needed to be condensed, that needed to be brought down and focused.

"I focused on it being Clary’s story and living in the moment. I had to let go of a beautifully rich back story, but I wanted to not fall prey to too much flashbacks and voiceovers. There’s a little bit of it.

"I believe that we didn’t have a choice, unless we were just talking heads. I wanted to focus in the now, in the moment, and what Clary’s story was and what was indispensable to tell about her story that needed to move her character or the story forward in that sense."

City of Bones is the latest teen book series to be adapted for the big screen and it is set to be a big hit amongst the fans.

Lily Collins takes on the central role of Clary Fray while Jamie Campbell Bower, Lena Headey and Jonathan Rhys Meyers are all also on the cast list.

Plans to adapt the second book The Mortal Instruments: City of Ashes are already underway.

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones is out now.
