The Secret Life of Pets has stayed at the top of the U.S box office and narrowly held off the challenge from Ghostbusters.

The Secret Life of Pets took a further $50.5 million to hold onto the number one spot for a second consecutive week.

Ghostbusters was the highest new entry inside the top ten as it opened at number two. Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon take on the central roles while Paul Feig is back in the director's chair.

The movie has been met positively critically and took $46 million in its opening weekend... however, it wasn't quite enough to topple The Secret Life of Pets.

The Legend of Tarzan slips a single place to three while Finding Dory was also down one at number four.

Comedy Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, which sees Zac Efron back on the big screen, rounded off the top five - it slipped down jut a single place.

The Purge: Election Year fell out of the top five as it was down one at six while Central Intelligence was also down one this week at number seven.

The Infiltrator was the second and final new entry inside the top ten this week as it opened at number sight.

The BFG and Independence Day: Resurgence were this week's biggest fallers as they both slipped two places to nine and number ten.
