Hardy is set to play both Ronnie and Reggie in the new movie, which charts the rise of the crime brothers and the terror that they spread through London. And while they are two interesting characters, Hardy realised that there were many people who would not want to see another movie about these men made.

Speaking to ShortList, the actor said: "One has to approach these things thinking about the families of the victims who were involved in the other end of it. Before you find the heart to like somebody, you've gotta look at their track record as best as possible: the people who've been hurt, the bodies, the suffering, people who were bullied, who lived in terror, who lost significant parts of their lives in the wake of these two men.

"There's a lot of sh*t to wade through. And a lot of people who do not, quite rightly, want to see anything to do with these two men. And if I were them, I wouldn't want to be involved myself, but there's also part of me that wants to know. That wants to get under the skin."

The critics are already raving about Hardy's double performance in the film, which sees him team up with writer and director Brian Helgeland for the first time. This is Helgeland's first film since 42 back in 2013 but he has also penned screenplays for L.A. Confidential and Mystic River.

Hardy is joined on the cast list by Paul Bettany, Emily Browning, Taron Egerton, Christopher Eccleston, Aneurin Barnard, Colin Morgan, and David Thewlis.

2015 has been a busy and a successful year for Hardy as we have already seen him star in Child 44, Mad Max: Fury Road and London Road. Mad Max saw him take over the role of Max Rockatansky and the film went on to be a huge critical and commercial success.

The actor has also completed work on The Revenant, which saw him reunite with Leonardo DiCaprio and work with Oscar winning filmmaker Alejandro González Iñárritu for the first time. The Revenant will be the first film for Iñárritu since the success of Birdman and is already being tipped as a possible Oscar contender.

Legend is released 9th September.
