Casting news for Sony’s Venom came thick and fast today, as it was confirmed world-famous actor Tom Hardy would be stepping into the titular role as the Marvel supervillain. Sony Pictures announced the news with a tweet and a picture of the actor, which you can see below:

Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer heads proceedings according to a number of reports, overseeing Hardy’s transition into one of the most recognisable Spider-Man villains of all time.

Having previously played Batman villain Bane in The Dark Knight Rises, Hardy has experience when it comes to bringing comic books to life, and will now share a universe with a planned Black Cat and Silver Sable team-up film. What isn’t clear however is whether or not the heroic Spider-Man will be appearing in any of Sony’s films.

Hardy will be playing the Eddie Brock incarnation of the Venom character; a former journalist who developed a hatred towards Spider-Man, because of the web slinger’s ruination of his serial killer theories.

Though he usually serves as a villain, Venom did eventually fight on the side of good, even working alongside Spider-Man at times.

Exactly which version of Venom and Eddie Brock we’ll be seeing on the big screen however remains to be seen.

Sony’s Venom is expected to hit the big screen on October 5, 2018.
