Fans of the Uncharted games series were surprised but excited when Sony Pictures revealed their movie adaptation would serve as an origin story for lead character Nathan Drake, rather than as a retelling of one of the stories told in the games or, a continuation of them.
When Tom Holland was announced as the actor bringing Nate to life on the big screen, there were more than few eyebrows raised, but after seeing him in action for the teasers and trailers that have showcased some of the action we can expect, he’s proven that he’s more than up to the job.
Now, in an interview with Total Film, Holland has explained how a conversation he had with Sony following the filming on his second Spider-Man movie, led to the idea for Nate’s cinematic adventure.
He explained: “I had a meeting… with Sony to pitch this idea of a young Bond film that I’d come up with. It was the origin story of James Bond. It didn’t really make sense. It didn’t work. It was the dream of a young kid, and I don’t think the Bond estate were particularly interested.
“The idea of a young Bond film sparked this idea, in turn, that you could do a Nathan Drake story as an origin story, rather than as an addition to the games. And that opened a conversation.”
With Holland's past comments surrounding Bond and his clear love for the Ian Fleming-created spy, it's certainly a believable story and, an incredible insight into some of the behind-the-scenes goings-on of actors and executives in the film industry.
If he’s got his eyes set on stepping into the shoes of 007 at some point in his career, it’s going to take more grounded and action-packed roles such as that of Nate to put him in the sights of casting directors.
Whether or not Uncharted fans are willing to take him into their hearts as a young Nate however, remains to be seen. Their reaction may just be the think that seals the fate of his big screen future outside of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
