Turning Red will be skipping a cinematic release, and heading straight to the homes of those with a Disney+ subscription.

Chairman for Disney Media & Entertainment Distribution, Kareem Daniel, stated that: “Disney+ subscribers around the world enthusiastically embraced Pixar’s Academy Award-winning Soul and the critically-acclaimed Luca when they premiered exclusively on the service and we look forward to bringing them Pixar’s next incredible feature film Turning Red.”

“Given the delayed box office recovery”, Daniel continued, “particularly for family films, flexibility remains at the core of our distribution decisions as we prioritize delivering the unparalleled content of The Walt Disney Company to audiences around the world.”

Turning Red follows confident, dorky 13-year-old Mei Lee (Rosalie Chiang), who can’t decide whether to stay her mother’s well-behaved daughter, or throw caution to the wind and let adolescence take the wheel.

Mei’s mother, Ming (Sandra Oh), is what you might call overprotective, and is never far from her daughter, even at school. This is of course a highly embarrassing reality for Mei, who seems to want to break free from her mother’s overbearing (yet loving) sight.

However, despite changes to her interests, relationships and body being almost too much to handle, imagine her shock when she turns into a giant red panda whenever she gets excited.

Mei is a very excitable young girl, an emotion which cases her literal wild side to come out, so trying to stay calm proves to be very difficult for her...

Turning Red appears to combine the difficulties of not only growing up, but doing so with a rather protective mother and, on top of that, Mei must cope with turning into a giant (and very adorable) red panda whenever she gets too excited; a bit like The Hulk, but cuter.

The animated adventure is directed by Academy Award winner Domee Shi (Pixar short film, Bao), and produced by Lindsey Collins.

Turning Red will arrive exclusively on Disney+ on March 11th, 2022.
