Following the huge success that was the first season of Netflix original series The Witcher and, ahead of its return for a second outing, the streaming service will play host to an original anime film set within the same universe.

The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf will serve as a prequel to the story told in the main series, following Geralt’s mentor Vesemir, who is described as a “swashbuckling young witcher who escaped a life of poverty to slay monsters for coin.”

When a kingdom that is already in despair due to politics is terrorised by a brand new monster however, Vesemir finds himself on an unexpected path that will force him to tackle the challenges and ghosts of his past, which he was hoping would remain buried for good.

You can watch the first-look trailer for the film below:

In a former teaser, we were given a lighthearted look at Vesemir's world but here, we are shown just how tragic and dark the universe can be, with children taken and transformed into hunters that must rid the world of its most dangerous creatures.

Theo James lends his voice to the role of Vesemir, with Lara Pulver, Graham McTavish and Mary McDonnell also starring.

The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf is written and produced by Beau DeMayo, with The Witcher showrunner and executive producer Lauren Schmidt Hissrich co-producing, alongside Studio Mir's Kwang Il Han, who is also directing. The original film hits Netflix on August 23rd, 2021.

Meanwhile, fans of the live-action Witcher series don’t have too much longer to wait before that show makes its comeback. The Witcher Season 2 is currently set to air on December 17th, 2021, exclusive to Netflix.
