James McAvoy says that X-Men: Days of Future Past is a more serious film than First Class.

X-Men: Days of Future is already one of the most anticipated films of 2014, and will see McAvoy reprise the role of Charles Xavier for the first time since First Class.

And the actor reveals that he was excited by the darker and more serious tone to this new film: a film which sees Bryan Singer return to the director’s chair.

Speaking to Total Film, the actor said: “It’s a more serious film than First Class, and I like that. There was nothing wrong with First Class, but it has more of a light-hearted nature.

“Bryan’s done a great job of marrying the different strands of the saga. I think it would have been hard for him to just come in and do what he did with the old movies.”

X-Men: Days of Future Past will mark the first time that McAvoy has teamed up with Singer, as the director returns to the X-Men franchise for the first time since X2.

As for McAvoy, we are going to see his Xavier going through some difficult times, as he has to adjust to life in a wheelchair.

This is the first big screen outing for the actor since the success of Filth in the autumn of last year. McAvoy has just completed work on Frankenstein: a re-telling of the Mary Shelley novel.

The film will sees McAvoy take on the role of Victor Von Frankenstein alongside Daniel Radcliffe and Jessica Brown Findlay.

X-Men: Days of Future Past is released 22nd May
