James Mangold

James Mangold

It has been a while since we have seen James Mangold in the director's chair, but he is back this week with The Wolverine.

The film sees him reunite with actor Hugh Jackman as he tackle the comic book genre for the very first time.

But throughout his directing career Mangold has made some cracking movies, and we take a look at some of those that you cannot miss.

- 3:10 To Yuma (2007)

The Western is a genre that we don't see all that often on the big screen right now - which is a bit of a sad statement in itself. But in 2007 Mangold bucked that trend as he brought a remake of 3:10 to Yuma to the big screen.

The movie saw Russell Crowe face off with Christian Bale as they took on the central role of Ben Wade and Dan Evans; Wade is an outlaw, while Evans is one of the men tasked with taking him to Yuma to put him on a train for heading for jail.

This movie proved that the Western is alive and kicking and, in the right hands, it can be a box office success; as this movie was.

It is not often that remakes live up to the original, but Mangold's take on the 1957 film does exactly that as he mixed action with character study.

It is Crowe and Bale that make this movie so great. These two character sit on opposite sides of the moral fence, but during the film they move closer together and respect one another - even if they never full agree.

- Walk The Line (2006)

You can't beat a good biopic movie and Mangold delivered one in 2006, in the form of Walk The Line.

This was one of my favourite movies of that year, as Joaquin Phoenix knocked it out the part as the Man in Black.

He really does capture every essence of Cash as he gets under the skin of this troubled and super talented man.

Reese Witherspoon is also a wonder June Carter; together Phoenix and Witherspoon have such chemistry and sparkled on the big screen.

James Mangold delivered a real homage to Cash in a film that is as much about the music as the man.

- Identity (2003)

Mangold tackled the thriller back in 2003 as he helmed Identity; the cast list included John Cusack, Ray Liotta, Amanda Peet and Alfred Molina.

The movie follows a group of strangers who are stranded in a Nevada motel during a storm. But there is a murderer amongst them and they are being picked off one by one.

If you like your serial killer thrillers then this is a great one as it is packed with twists and turns; the central twist being terrific that you won't see coming.

The writing and directing is tight as Mangold notches the tension up scene by scene.

This is exactly how a thriller should be, great suspense, effective twists, good cast and not all of that torture porn that I absolutely hate - not to mention is totally unnecessary.

- Girl, Interrupted (2000)

Girl, Interrupted was released back in 2000, and was based on Susanna Kaysen's memoir of the same name that chronicled her 18 month stay in a mental institution.

Winona Ryder took on the central role in the film, while Angelina Jolie. Whoopi Goldberg and Jared Leto were all on board.

Girl, Interrupted offered us an insight into a world that we never really see and it sees Ryder and Jolie deliver a pair of great performances.

The movie proved to be a turning point in Jolie's acting career, as she went on to win a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her performance.

The Wolverine is out now.
