- Ben Hur became the most successful film in Oscar history in 1959, as it scooped 11 Academy Awards; including Best Picture.

This feat was equally in 1997 by Titanic and by The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King in 2003.

- All About Eve and Titanic have picked up the most nominations in Oscar history, as they both picked up fourteen nods in 1959 and 1997. All About Eve won six, while Titanic won eleven.

- Jack Nicholson is the actor with the most Oscar nominations, having picked up twelve during his career. Laurence Olivier comes in second with ten nods during his career.

- Nicholson is in an elite group of stars who have won three Oscars during their acting careers. Walter Brennan, Ingrid Bergman, Meryl Streep, and Daniel Day Lewis are the others.

- Katharine Hepburn is the actor with the most Oscar wins in Academy history, winning four: she won Best Actress for Morning Glory, Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, The Lion in Winter and On Golden Pond.

- Daniel Day-Lewis became the first actor to win three Best Actor Oscars when he triumphed for Lincoln in 2012. He also won for My Left Foot and There Will Be Blood.

- Meryl Streep is the actress with the most Oscar nominations, having picked up eighteen during her illustrious career.

- Jennifer Lawrence became the youngest three-time nominee after picking up a Best Supporting Actress nod this year for American Hustle. She was nominated for Winter's Bone and won Best Actress last year for Silver Linings Playbook.

- Tatum O'Neal is the youngest ever Oscar winner: scooping the Best Supporting Actress gong in 1973 when she was just ten.

- Christopher Plummer is the oldest ever Oscar winner, as he was 82 years and 75 days old when he won Best Supporting Actor for Beginners in 2011.

- Clint Eastwood is the oldest Best Director winner at 74 years and 272 days for Million Dollar baby in 2004.

- Kate Winslet became the youngest actor to receive five Oscar nominations, when she picked up a nod for Little Children at the age of 31. Bette Davis was the previous youngest at thirty three.

- It Happened One Night, One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, The Silence Of The Lambs are the only three films to win the top five major awards, for Picture, Actor, Actress, Director, and Screenplay.

- Peter Finch and Heath Ledger are the only other actors to win an Oscar posthumously. James Dean, Spencer Tracy, and Massimo Troisi are the other posthumous nominees.

- Peter O'Toole is the actor with the most nominations without a win; he picked up eight Oscar nods during his career. Richard Burton is close behind with seven nods without a win.

- Thelma Ritter and Deborah Kerr both picked up six Oscar nominations during their careers without ever winning.

- Luise Rainer (1936-37), Spencer Tracy (1937-38), Katharine Hepburn (1967-68), Jason Robards (1976-77), and Tom Hanks (1993-94) are the only actors to win consecutive Oscars.

- Judi Dench has picked up an Oscar for the shortest time on screen. She won the Best Supporting Actress gong for Shakespeare In Love with less than eight minutes of screen time.
