Rush

Starring: Chris Hemsworth, Daniel Bruhl, Olivia Wilde, Alexandra Maria Lara

Director: Ron Howard

Rating: 5/5

Rush has been one of the movies that I have been looking forward to all year as Ron Howard returns to the director’s chair for the first time since The Dilemma.

And this movie sees Howard back at his best as he delivers a movie that not only captures the thrill and the danger of Formula 1, but also the many layers of two of the sport’s most iconic stars.

Set against the sexy and glamorous golden age of Formula 1 racing, Rush portrays the exhilarating true story of two of the greatest rivals the world has ever witnessed - handsome English playboy Hunt and his methodical, brilliant opponent, Lauda.

Taking us into their personal lives on and off the track, Rush follows the two drivers as they push themselves to the breaking point of physical and psychological endurance, where there is no shortcut to victory and no margin for error. If you make one mistake, you die.

From start to finish this movie is just wonderful, it gets under the skin of these two men as well as being a film that will have you on the edge of your seat.

Not only is Rush one of the best movies that I have seen all year, but it is one of the best sporting biopics of all time.

Formula 1 was built for the big screen and the race sequences have been so beautifully shot that it really will take your breath away.

This is by far the best movie from Ron Howard in quite some time as he has packed these scenes with drama and adrenaline - it really is magnificent.

On top of all that the movie is really driven forward by two fantastic central performances from Chris Hemsworth and Daniel Bruhl.

Hemsworth shows that there is more to him as an actor than just playing Thor, as he his portrayal of the dashing, boozing and womanising James Hunt is spot on - his English accent is also fantastic.

This could well be the breakout role of Daniel Bruhl as he really gets under the skin of Niki Lauda; a man who takes his sport seriously and is the complete opposite from the laid back Hunt.

Their performances are just magnificent as they play two very different men who both have the same goal; to win races.

While Hunt and Lauda may have been major rivals on the track that rivalry propelled both of them to greater things; it helped Hunt become an ever better driver, while it helped Lauda get back in the car after the accident that almost claimed his life.

And yet the pair of them had the up most respect for the talents of the other; that is captured perfectly in the final scene in the movie.

While the most does look at the private lives of both of these characters, Howard never descends into melodrama - instead he paints them as two men who knew the risks that they were taking every time they got into a Formula 1 car.

Rush is an extremely compelling movie that will have your heart in your mouth on more than one occasion. It if fast paced and exciting and is absolutely not to be missed!!! This is a real sporting gem that we have never seen the likes of before on the big screen.

Rush is out now.
