Today (June 15, 2019), #TheFilmWasBetter found itself trending on Twitter, with users sharing their favourite book-based movies that they actually think told a better story on the big screen, than on their original pages. With that in mind, we've decided to take a look back and pick out seven of our own favourite films that made a better impact in cinemas than on library shelves.

7. Jaws (1975)

Steven Spielberg is a man who knows exactly what he's doing when he's sat in the director's chair. Adapting Peter Benchley's novel was always going to be a challenge, but audiences were scared stiff by the shark terrorising a small coastal town. Whilst the creature was always seen as a villain, he was really just keeping his home in order! Jaws was such a success, that it came back for a number of sequels.

6. The Maze Runner (2014)

Directed by Wes Ball, in the filmmaker's directorial debut, his take on James Dashner's 2009 dystopian novel clearly impressed, as the rest of the film series was allowed to continue and adapt the entirety of Dashner's books. With great performances from young talent, The Maze Runner is a fun and suspenseful adventure that audiences will keep going back to for years to come.

5. The Shining (1980)

Often referred to as one of the best horror movies of all time, The Shining is a... well, shining example of films that are better than the book they're based on. Whilst Stephen King's writing is as brilliant as ever, Jack Nicholson's standout performance as Jack Torrance set the world on fire. "Here's Johnny!" has got to be one of the most beloved quotes in cinematic history.

4. Twilight (2008)

Twilight author Stephenie Meyer never really did it for me. I read the entire novel series, sure, but when Edward Cullen and Bella Snow made their way to my local cinema, and I was dragged along to check it out, I was sold. I spent my college years with a poster of Robert Pattinson on my world, all vamped up. I'm definitely due a rewatch, but from memory, this was a winner.

3. Jurassic Park (1993)

There's really no denying this one. Whilst reading Michael Crichton's book is great for super-fans, it's the movie that really allows the narrative to thrive, and envelops the audience with brilliance. Plus, they have Jeff Goldblum. What more could you ask for?

2. IT (2017)

Another Stephen King story here. Whilst he is without a doubt one of the most talented writers on the planet, there is the odd occasion when filmmakers manage to bring his work to life in a way even our imaginations could not. This was another one of those times when it happened, with director Andy Muschietti's vision proving to be a record-breaking success. He'll return later this year with the release of IT: Chapter Two, reuniting the Losers Club in Derry as adults, to face down Pennywise once more.

1. Casino Royale (2006)

Every so often, a film will shock you. That was the case with Daniel Craig's first ever turn as James Bond, where he and the team behind the movie managed to smash it completely out of the park. Ian Fleming's book of the same name is a thrilling ride, but hardly matches up when put alongside director Martin Campbell's offering. An incredible feat, as the books beat down big screen Bond in every other case.
