Daniel Craig as James Bond

Daniel Craig as James Bond

All week we have been looking at the greatest action heroes that have lit up the big screen over the years looking at the likes of John McClane and Indiana Jones.

But there is no greater character in this fine action genre than Ian Fleming’s literary creation James Bond.

James Bond is one the longest film franchise of all time and over fifty years we have seen six actors deliver six very different interpretations of the super spy.

It was back in 1962 that we were introduced to this character for the first time as Dr No hit the big screen - and it was to be a role that made Sean Connery a star.

Over the years George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton and Pierce Brosnan have played Bond and it is Daniel Craig who currently holds the title as 007.

As well as an action hero Bond was suave and sophisticated with a keen interest in women and over the years a string of beautiful women have played the love interest for 007.

Bond was a huge hit, popularising the genre of the action movie, as audiences were taken in by elaborate car chases, guns, gadgets and girls.

But we have seen new life breathed into the franchise since Craig took over the role in 2006 as Casino Royale ushered in a new era for this franchise.

The film goes back to the very first Ian Fleming novel with Bond just receiving 00 status. But it was the portrayal of Bond that has been so interesting in recent years as we have seen a side to this character tat we have never seen before.

We have seen a darker side to this character and perhaps more raw and real than ever before. Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace and Skyfall have been brutal films and they are grittier and more violent than ever before.

But it is the 2012 film Skyfall that really has got everyone excited about the Bond franchise once again as it became the first film in the series to gross in excess of $1billion at the global box office.

With Sam Mendes in the director’s chair this is a film that nods back to the past but looks to the future as the director balances well the hallmarks of a Bond movie with new ideas.

Skyfall is the greatest Bond movie of all time and it is exciting to see where this iconic character is going to be taken next.
