The Amazing Spider Man 2

The Amazing Spider Man 2

One of the most successful film genres of recent years has been the comic book movie as some of the most famous Marvel and DC Comic characters have been brought to the big screen.

Marvel and DC have gone head to head for film supremacy with movies such as Avengers Assemble and The Dark Knight Rises breaking the $1 billion barrier in the last twelve months.

2013 is set to be another great year for the genre with Iron Man 3, Man of Steel and Thor: The Dark World all hitting the big screen.

But there are plenty more movies in the pipeline and we take a look at some of the projects that are on the horizon.

The Spider Man franchise got a reboot last year with director Marc Webb at the helm and now filming on The Amazing Spider Man 2 is well under way.

Webb is back in the director’s chair while Andrew Garfield will be back in the title role while Emma Stone reprises the role of Gwen Stacy.

There are also some terrific new additions to the cast including Jamie Foxx (Electro), Paul Giamatti (The Rhino) and Shailene Woodley (Mary Jane Watson).

While details on the plot are being kept under wraps the movie will be hitting the big screen in April 2014.

The Amazing Spider Man was one of the most financially successful movies of 2012 as it grossed in excess of  $752 million at the global box office and the second film should do just as well.

Captain America 2: The Winter Solider is another movie that is set to begin production any time and will come three years after the first stand alone film.

After his exploits in Avengers Assemble the movie sees Chris Evans reprise the role of Steve Rodgers aka Captain America in a modern day story.

The film will follow Rodgers as he tries to adjust to his new life. But he is reunited with his friend

James 'Bucky' Barnes who is now an assassin called the Winter Soldier.

Anthony Mackie and Emily VanCamp are two of the new additions to the cast list as they will take on the roles of The Falcon and Sharon Carter.

We are also going to find out more about Nick Fury as Samuel L. Jackson will be returning to the role. Scarlett Johansson is also believed to be making an appearance as the Black Widow.

The movie is set for an April 2014 release and filming is due to get underway any time as Anthony and Joe Russo take over the director’s chair.

Another franchise that we will return next year is X-Men as work on X-Men: Days of Future Past is about to get underway.

This is the sequel to X-Men: First Class and will see Bran Singer return to the X-Men franchise as director for the first time since X2.

James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender will be back as Professor X and Magneto while Jennifer Lawrence and Nicholas Hoult will also be back.

If you are a lover of the X-Men universe then you are absolutely in for a treat with this movie as Ian McKellan, Patrick Stewart, Hugh Jackman and Halle Berry will be reprising their roles as Charles Xavier, Magneto, Wolverine and Storm.

Singer has such huge success with the first two films of the X-Men franchise and it is great to see him return with this movie. He has hinted that he will put certain things right for the X-Men: The Las Stand and this is incredibly intriguing.

2014 is set to be another superhero fest with X-Men: Days of Future Past set to hit the big screen in July.

Iron Man 3 is set to kick off Marvel’s Phase 2 with Thor: The Dark World and Captain America: The Winter Solider - the phase while be brought to a close with a second Avengers movie.

Avengers 2 is set to hit the big screen in 2015 and director Joss Whedon is working on the script as we speak. While there have been no announcements as to what the plot is going to be Whedon has hinted that the film will focus on the relationships between the characters.

Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner and Scarlett Johansson are all expected to reprise the roles of Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Hawkeye and Black Widow.

It has also been confirmed that the next time that we see the Hulk will be in this Avengers sequel and there will be no stand alone move before that.

Another much talked about ensemble superhero movie is Justice League but there is still no announcement on director or cast - will it even go ahead?

Christopher Nolan is many people’s favourite to direct while Christian Bale and Henry Cavill have both been ruled out of appearing. Ryan Reynolds has also ruled out reprising the role of Green Lantern unless the right script and director were presented to him.

So while this is a movie that many comic book fans would like to - mainly because the success of Avengers Assemble showed that it could be done - it doesn’t look like we will be seeing it any time soon.

However another ensemble movie that we will be seeing is Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy as James Gunn is set to be in the director’s chair.

For now Chris Pratt and Dave Bautista are the only confirmed names on the cast list as they are set to take on the roles of Peter Quill and Drax The Destroyer.

Another marvel movie that we will be seeing is Ant Man - a movie that has been in the pipeline for some time.

Director Edgar Wright has been working on the script and completing filming on At World’s End and now this movie is set to go into production next year.

A 2015 release date has been set but no cast has been announced.

Other potential comic book movies that could be in the pipeline include Doctor Strange and Dark Universe.

So if, like me, you are a huge fan of this genre there are going to be plenty of terrific movies in the pipeline over the next couple of years. I personally cannot wait to see Avengers 2 - can Whedon top the first film? We will have to wait and see!!
