In 2013, we saw the beginning of The Purge franchise, where in America for one night a year, all crime including murder is legal.

The first movie focused on one home and one family, who lock up their house with big security gates that promise safety; of course that isn’t the case. From then on, the films have broadened their horizons, with the following films carrying on from one another (with the exception of the prequel, The First Purge, in 2018) and taking place in the streets of the United States.

Now, with the release of The Forever Purge’s trailer, it seems that some people enjoyed this grisly event a lot more than others, as gangs of bloodthirsty killers take to the streets to elongate The Purge.

The event of The Purge lasts for 12 hours, however some lawless marauders decide that this isn’t long enough, and wish to extend The Purge indefinitely.

An underground movement, unsatisfied with only one day out of the year being used for the purging of sins and crime, decide to rise up and begin a class and race massacre along America’s southern border, in an attempt to ‘purify’ the land.

Mexican refugees Adela (Ana de la Reguera) and her husband Juan (Tenoch Huerta) have fled their country and now live in Texas, working for a wealthy family called the Tuckers on their farm.

Juan impresses the head of the Tucker family, Caleb (Will Patton); unfortunately, that only angers Celeb’s son Dylan (Josh Lucas). On the morning after the annual Purge, a masked group of killers attack the Tucker family, including Dylan’s pregnant wife, Cassie (Leven Rambin).

Both families must now work together to fight back against the gang of murderers as their country descends into madness and chaos, and America begins to turn into a giant house of horrors.

The trailer for this movie is brilliant; there are Saw vibes subtly creeping through some scenes, as a character’s head is held close to a moving motorbike tyre, and the trap a woman finds herself in definitely edges this movie into more of a horror feature than the others in the franchise.

While horror has of course always been an aspect of these films, it seems that violence and action took over, which is in no way a bad thing. Now, with The Forever Purge, it seems that eerie silences and characters being chased with threats of torture and death, will dominate the screen and really lean into the terrifying aspect of disturbing masks and the ever-present threat of death.

The class and race aspect has also been a theme within this franchise, as many of the killers and hooligans believe that the rich hide behind strong walls, showing how cowardly they really are. This film seems to step that up a notch and add a race element to the mix, heating up the narrative.

The Forever Purge will be in cinemas everywhere from July 16th, 2021!
