The Great Gatsby

The Great Gatsby

The stars of The Great Gatsby were out in force yesterday as Baz Luhrmann's film opened the 2013 Cannes Film Festival.

It may have been a little soggy on the French Riviera last night but that didn't stop Luhrmann gracing the red carpet along with Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey mulligan, Tobey Maguire and Joel Edgerton.

The movie is a bog screen adaptation of the much loved F. Scott Fitzgerald novel and sees Luhrmann back in the director's chair for the first time since Australia.

The Great Gatsby will see DiCaprio take on the role of Jay Gatsby as he reunites with Luhrmann for a second project together.

Fellow Oscar nominee Carey Mulligan plays love interest Daisy Buchanan and she is working with the Aussie filmmaker for the very first time.

The movie has already opened in the U.S. and finished the weekend at number two after taking a very solid $51 million.

The Great Gatsby may have opened the Cannes Film Festival but it is not in competition for the prestigious Palme d'Or.

Twenty movies will compete for the main prize and Only God Forgives, starring Ryan Gosling, and Inside Llewyn Davis by Joel and Ethan Coen are a couple of the films to watch out for over the next few days.

Take a look at all our The Great Gatsby images from last night's premiere at Cannes.

The Cannes Film Festival will run 15th - 26th May.
