The Monuments Men

The Monuments Men

The Monuments Men is one of the movies of early 2014 that I am really looking forward to, as it marks the return of George Clooney to the director's chair.

Clooney has focused much of his directing career in the past, and this time around, he is focusing on World War II.

Clooney is starring in the film as well as being in the director's chair and he talks about the film in this new featurette:

As you may expect, Clooney has brought together a fantastic cast as Matt Damon, Bill Murray, Cate Blanchett, John Goodman, Jean Dujardin and Hugh Bonneville join him on the cast list.

Clooney has made some terrific movies such as Confessions of a Dangerous Mind and Good Night, and Good Luck, but this is his first directorial outing since The Ides of March.

The Monuments Men focuses on an unlikely World War II platoon, tasked by FDR with going into Germany to rescue artistic masterpieces from Nazi thieves and returning them to their rightful owners.

It would be an impossible mission: with the art trapped behind enemy lines, and with the German army under orders to destroy everything as the Reich fell, how could these guys - seven museum directors, curators, and art historians, all more familiar with Michelangelo than the M-1 - possibly hope to succeed?

But as the Monuments Men, as they were called, found themselves in a race against time to avoid the destruction of 1000 years of culture, they would risk their lives to protect and defend mankind’s greatest achievements.

It is always to see Clooney back in the director's chair, and The Monuments Men looks set to be another gem from this great filmmaker.

The Monuments Men is released 21st February.
