Tom Hiddleston

Tom Hiddleston

Tom Hiddleston has become one of the most in demand actors in the last couple of years, and has been part of some fantastic movies.

He is back on the big screen this week as he reprises the much loved role of Loki in Thor: The Dark World - the role that really sent his star rocketing.

To celebrate the return of Hiddleston and Loki we take a look at some of the British actor's best movies.

- Unrelated

Unrelated marked the big screen debut for Hiddleston as he teamed up with director Joanna Hogg in the first of three projects together.

The movie follows Anna, a woman unhappy in a relationship who goes to stay with her friend's family in Tuscany; here she befriends a group of teenagers.

Unrelated is a fascinating picture of middle aged relationships, loneliness and the inspiration of youth.

Hiddleston took on the role of adolescent Oakley, who sparks something in Anna. The relationship between Anna and Oakley is portrayed so wonderfully by these two actors and really does drive the film.

Unrelated premiered at the BFI London Film Festival in 2007 and kicked off the movie career of Hiddleston.

- Thor

While Hiddleston has appeared in plenty of movies since making his debut in Unrelated, it was Thor and the role of Loki that proved to be the major breakthrough.

Hiddleston reunited with his Wallander co-star Kenneth Branagh, who was in the director's chair for the Marvel film.

It was with the film Thor that you really see the birth of the villain that Loki becomes as he learns the truth about who he is: he is not the Asgardian prince he was brought up to believe that he was.

There is a great banter between Thor and Loki and it is this relationship that really does push this movie forward: in fact this relationship has been a major part of Avengers and Thor: The Dark World.

The movie grossed over $449 million at the global box office and saw Hiddleston's star rocket.

- Midnight in Paris

In 2011 Hiddleston joined an ensemble cast and director Woody Allen for the fantastic Midnight in Paris.

The movie follow screenwriter Gil who, while on holiday with his fiancee and her family in Paris, finds himself going back to the 1920s every night at midnight.

Hiddleston took on the role of F. Scott Fitzgerald, who befriends Gil when he finds himself in 1920s Paris.

Midnight In Paris is about one man's love for a city and Allen really does try to capture the romance and the charm in both modern day and the past.

The ensemble cast are just a delight as Allen tries to show some of the problems facing icons of the past: Fitzgerald had a difficult relationship with his wife Zelda that was fuelled by jealousy and resentment.

- The Deep Blue Sea

The Deep Blue Sea was another movie success for Hiddleston as he worked with director Terence Davies, and teamed up with Oscar winner Rachel Weisz.

Based on the 1952 play by Terence Rattigan, the movie follows married Hester Collyer who embarks on an affair with former RAF pilot Freddie Page.

Weisz and Hiddleston just sizzle together as they depict a complicated relationship. Hester is a woman who is not certain of what she wants, while Freddie is a man who is haunted by his experiences in the Second World War.

Believe me when I say this movie is heavy going, but it is a rich character driven film that makes compelling watching.

- Avengers Assemble

Avengers Assemble is where Hiddleston has really thrived as Loki as he gives a fascinatingly devious performance.

Loki may be the villain and yet Hiddleston plays him with a wit and a charm that you cannot help but like; he really has become one of the most loved Marvel characters.

This film really does belong to Hiddleston as he has many of the best moments as well of the best lines - it is obvious that the actor is clearly having a ball while his character is wrecking destruction.

Avengers Assemble was a box office smash last summer as it went on to gross over $1.5 billion worldwide. Not only was it the biggest movie of the year, but it became the third biggest grossing movie of all time.

And we are going to be seeing plenty of Hiddleston on the big screen in 2014 as he is set to star in Only Lovers Left Alive and Muppets Most Wanted.

After his stint in the theatre - where he is starring in Coriolanus - he will be teaming up with director Guillermo Del Toro for Crimson Peak.
