World War Z

World War Z

Brad Pitt is back on the big screen this week as he leads the cast in zombie epic World War Z.

The movie is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Max Brooks and sees the actor team up with director Marc Forster for the first time.

To celebrate Pitt's return to the big screen we take a look back over his career at his finest movie performances.

-Thelma & Louise (1991)

The role of J.D. in Thelma & Louise may not have been a big one but it was the movie that really grabbed everyone's attention.

J.D. is a small time crook who befriends Thelma - played by the fantastic Geena Davis. But it was the love scene between the pair that had just about everyone talking.

The movie turned Pitt into an instant sex symbol and from that moment his career went only one way... and that was up.

Thelma & Louise was also a huge critical and commercial success and went on to be nominated for six Oscars.

- 12 Monkeys (1995)

Pitt's first Oscar nomination came in 1995 for his role as Jeffrey Goines in 12 Monkeys.

Directed by Terry Gilliam the movie was based on La jetee by Chris Marker and saw Pitt team up with Bruce Willis and Madeleine Stowe.

12 Monkeys was a dark and gritty sci-fi film that was unlike anything that Pitt had done before.

He showed that he was more than just a pretty face as he picked up a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination for his work and won a Golden Globe.

- Fight Club (1999)

"The first rule of Fight Club is: You do not talk about Fight Club." - this is one of the most famous lines in movie history and it was delivered by Tyler Durden.

Pitt took on the role of Durden in the David Fincher directed movie; which was a big screen adaptation of the novel of the same name by Chuck Palahniuk.

Fight Club was a dark and brutal film and is one of the best films to hit the big screen in the last fifteen years.

It is a riveting performance from Pitt from start to finish as Durden is one of those characters that just draws you in.

Fight Club was a brave piece of filmmaking and a career highlight for all that were involved.

- Babel (2006)

In 2006 Pitt teamed up with Cate Blanchett for Babel, which was directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu.

Pitt and Blanchett play a couple in a movie of interlinking stories set around the globe.

After seeing Pitt in the likes of the Ocean's Eleven series this was a very different project for him - yet it was a role where he really excelled.

Sure, this is not the most uplifting movie that you are ever going to watch but it is a great piece of filmmaking.

Pitt went on to receive a Best Supporting Actor Golden Globe nomination for his performance.

- The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008)

Pitt reunited with director David Fincher and actress Cate Blanchett in 2008 for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button - which was based on the short story of the same name by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

This remains one of Pitt's finest performances as he took on the role of Benjamin; a man who ages backwards.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button a tender hearted movie that looks at life, the ageing process as well as dealing with loss and at times it feels like a fantasy movie that’s set in the real world.

It is a beautiful and heartfelt film that has two fantastic central performances in Pitt and Blanchett.

The movie went on to receive thirteen Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Pitt.

- Moneyball (2011)

Pitt took on the biographical sports drama in 2011 as he brought the story of Billy Beane to the big screen.

The movie saw him team up with director Bennett Miller and was based on the novel of the same name by Michael Lewis.

The film follows Beane as he uses an unusual system to recruit players for the Oakland Athletics baseball team.

Moneyball is a true underdog story that is intelligent, and funny as well as quite moving and follows the behind the scenes dealings of baseball rather than what goes on on the pitch.

It is a no nonsense performance from Pitt as Beane is a man that you have to admire for his guts an determination - even if you don't always agree with him.

The movie was nominated for six Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Actor.
