Terminator is one of the most iconic film franchises of all time and the latest instalment - Terminator Genisys - has hit the big screen just in time for the weekend.

The Terminator

The Terminator

Terminator Genisys is the fifth film in the series but Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgement Day are widely regarded as the two greatest movies in this series.

We look back at the James Cameron movies and pick out some of the franchise's most iconic and memorable moments - and there really are a whole host to choose from.

- I'll Be Back - The Terminator

It was back in 1985 when The Terminator hit the big screen here in the UK and sent Arnold Schwarzenegger's star rocketing. He had enjoyed successes as Conan, but it was his role as The Terminator that really was to be one of the most defining moments of his career.

The Terminator is a terrific story, has great characters, and is action packed... however, it is also remembered for single lines of dialogue.

'I'll Be Back' is one of the most famous lines in movie history and we heard it muttered for the first time in The Terminator.

- Come With Me If You Want To Live - The Terminator

The gun battle between the Terminator and Kyle Reese is one of the early explosive action scenes of The Terminator - and the scene where we realise that Reese is actually a good guy.

As Arnie tracks down Sarah Connor to a rather grungy bar, he is ready to complete his mission, kill her, and change the future forever. However, Reese has been sent back in time to protect her and the future of her son Joh.

In this scene we see him spring into action to defend her from the Terminator - therefore setting the wheels of the future in motion. It is a thrilling moment in the film and kicks of the franchises' terrific love story.

- Hospital Scene - Terminator 2: Judgement Day

Sarah Connor is one of the most iconic action heroines in cinema history and it is the role that Linda Hamilton will forever be synonymous with.

Ten years have passed between events of the first and second film and in Terminator 2: Judgement Day, we see a very different Sarah Connor. She and John have been separated; he is now living with foster parents while she has been institutionalised.

Instead of the woman who needs protecting, she is the protector as he is ready to move heaven and earth to keep her young son from harm. This scene sees her breaking out of the hospital that holds her... until she comes face to face with the Terminator!!! But he is not the enemy that he once was.

- I Need Your Clothes, Your Boots, and Your Motorcycle/ Bad To The Bone - Terminator 2: Judgment Day

The Terminator makes quite an arrival in both of the movies - but the scene in Terminator 2: Judgement Day is my personal favourite.

A naked Arnie walks in a bar and demands that clothes, boots, and a motorcycle are handed over to him. Needless, to say he wins the fight that ensues and gets exactly what he asks for.

As Arnie steps out of the bar, George Thorogood's 'Bad to the Bone' bursts into life and we get the first image of the Terminator in his leathers. Great movie moment.

- Liquid Metal - Terminator 2: Judgment Day

Robert Patrick takes on the villainous role of the T-1000 in Judgement Day, who is sent back to kill John Connor and stop him from becoming the future leader of the human rebel group against Skynet.

John Connor is protected by Arnie's Terminator... but he is facing an advanced cyborg that is made up of liquid metal. Judgement Day brought us our first look at this liquid metal villain who seems almost indestructible.

This movie really did cement Patrick as one of the greatest move villains of all time and this great scene showed everyone that defeating him was not going to be that straightforward.

- Canal Chase - Terminator 2: Judgment Day

There are some many terrific action moments to enjoy in Terminator 2: Judgement Day, but one of the most iconic is the canal chase in LA.

Armed with a truck, the T-1000 has John in his sights and he looks unlikely to outrun him on his bike... but do not fear, as Arnie is not that far away.

Send back to protect the young boy, the Terminator jumps into action and he and John escape on a motorbike. This really is one of the franchises' most memorable scenes and kicks off a great relationship between the Terminator and John Connor.

Other great moments from the movies include the Apocalyptic opening to Terminator 2: Judgement Day, Arnie's great line Hasta La Vista, Baby and the You're Terminated moment at the end of the first film.

Terminator Genisys is out now.
