The Stag

The Stag

In many circles, a bachelor party is a rite of passage. It is one last send off, one final night of story-making shenanigans before the responsibilities of married life take over.

And because of their notorious concoction of drugs, booze and strippers, many films have used them as comic fodder. Whether following the zaniness of the parties themselves or the comic aftermath, the genre has entertained generations for decades.

To celebrate the release of The Stag, the latest (and refreshingly different) instalment, we are taking a look at some of the best bachelor party films.

- The Hangover

Sometimes the aftermath of the bachelor party can be even wilder than the party itself.

Following a wolf pack of friends as they search for the missing groom the morning after the bachelor party, the blockbuster The Hangover proved just that.

With cameos from Mike Tyson, Rob Riggle, and Heather Graham, The Hangover didn’t skip a comic beat, and created the most successful comedy franchise of the last 10 years.

- Very Bad Things

Bachelor parties can often get out of hand rather quickly. Between the combinations of alcohol, drugs, and entertainment, these on screen events often take on a hilarious life of their own.

But in the grand scheme of things, it’s all fun and games until someone accidently kills a stripper. In this dark comedy, John Favreau stars as the groom to be.

When the hired hooker is accidently killed during Favreau’s bachelor party, guilt slowly tears apart the group, leading to deadly conclusions.

- Bachelor Party

For anyone born after 1990, it might be hard to see Tom Hanks as a wild bachelor party’s man of honour. From his lead role in 1992’s Forest Gump to Walt Disney in last year’s Saving Mr. Banks, Tom Hanks has become Hollywood’s de facto ‘feel good’ movie star.

But like many married men, before taking on his more family friendly persona, Tom Hanks had a party side of his own.

When Hanks’ friends decide to send him off into married life with the craziest bachelor party ever, their night quickly goes from insane to infamous.

Co-starring an amphetamine snorting donkey, Bachelor Party became a cult classic, and in the process, started a film genre of its own.

- American Wedding

The third instalment of the wildly popular American Pie series takes place at the protagonist pair’s eventual wedding.

The bachelor party is supposed to be a quiet affair - but who can keep anything quiet when Stifler takes over?

Gilrs named Fraulein Brandi and Officer Krystal show up and crash a romantic dinner - Kevin winds up naked in a closet tied to a chair - you can see where this is going...

- The Stag

The Stag has been referred to as a very Irish Hangover. A group of modern men embark on a relaxed walking holiday in place of the usual stag parties we tend to think of. Then The Machine happens.

The Machine (that is his name!) is a one man bag of chaos - and soon starts to re-stag the stag party. Incidents in tents, dancing with electric fences, fires, and shotguns, make for a bachelor party to remember.

The Stag is in cinemas this Friday.
