The Congress

The Congress

The UK Jewish Film Festival is in its seventeenth year this year and has put together another fantastic line-up of movies from around the world.

The festival will run from 30th October through to the 17th November and will showcase over eighty movies from established filmmakers to first time directors.

We take a look at the stand out movies that you need to watch out for as the festival gets underway.

- The Congress

The Congress is one of the movies to watch out for as it marks the return to the director's chair of Ari Folman.

Folman was behind the fantastic Waltz With Bashir back in 2008. and The Congress is his first film since that release.

Congress sticks with the animation genre but moves away from the documentary as he tackles the sci-fi genre.

Robin Wright takes on the role of an aging and out of work actress who accepts one last job - however the consequences of her decision affect her in ways she didn't consider.

Folman has brought together a great cast as Wright is joined by Harvey Keitel, Jon Hamm, Paul Giamatti and Danny Huston.

- The Jewish Cardinal

Ilan Duran Cohen is back in the director's chair with his new film The Jewish Cardinal; this film will open the festival.

This gripping, star-studded historical drama tells the story of Jean-Marie Lustiger, the Jewish-born head of the French Church and close confidant of Pope John-Paul II.

Laurent Lucas will take on the central role of Jean-Marie Lustiger in what is a tour de force performance from the actor.

Aurelien Recoing, Audrey Dana and Pascal Greggory join Lucas on the cast list in what is set to be one of the most dramatic movies on show at the festival.

- In the Shadow

David Ondrícek's new film In The Shadow will get its UK premiere at the festival and is one not to miss.

Ondrícek teams up with Marek Epstein to pen the screenplay which is set in former Czechoslovakia amid dramatic events of the 1950s.

Ivan Trojan will take on the central role of Hakl, who is investigating a jewellery store heist.

But the investigation leads him down a dark and dangerous path that put his life and the lives of his family at risk.

In the Shadow is set to be a powerful and provocative crime drama with strong performances from a very talented cast.

- Fill The Void

Rama Burshtein will be making her feature film directorial debut with Fill The Void; which was screened at the Venice Film Festival last year.

At the festival Hadas Yaron won the Ophir Award for Best Actress for her fantastic central performance.

The movie follows a young Hasidic Jewish woman is pressured into an arranged levirate marriage to an older widower.

Burshtein has penned the screenplay as well as being in the director's chair, and it will be one of the movies not to miss during the festival.

- Cupcakes

There is also some great comedy on the line up including Cupcakes, the brand new film for director Eytan Fox.

This hilarious and heart-warming musical comedy about life, love and friendship is the guiltiest pleasure of the year.

Cupcakes will close the festival on 17th November and is the UK premiere for the film.

The UK Jewish Film Festival runs 30th October - 17th November.
