Rage Against The Machine

Rage Against The Machine

Whilst the Christmas number one isn’t actually revealed until Sunday, and today is Friday (no matter how hard I try, I can’t see into the future) I’ve decided to make this week’s song of the week, the track I think deserves to be Xmas number one.

Now I know the battle for the top spot has been raging for the past week, but I think when it comes down to it, Rage Against The Machine really deserve to synch that highly sought-after accolade.

Now I know as a metal band, they might not dream of reaching number one (a Metasl Hammer award would be nice though) but the thing is… even though this song was released back in the 1990’s, it never charted anywhere near as highly as it will on Sunday.

However, this band have been working on their music for over 15 years, without hardly any recognition in the mainstream charts, but as soon as they threaten a teenage wannabe popstar they’re suddenly branded ‘bullies’ by Simon Cowell and friends?

Personally I think their Radio Five Live appearance this week proved that they are a band who aren’t going to let ‘the machine’ change their musical values or beliefs, and I think that really deserves a pat on the back.

Not only that, but we have a band who have put their heart and soul into their music for as long as they can remember, and a guy who has stood up and sang in front of a live audience once a week for the past 12 weeks and now expects to make Christmas number one as he was the last man standing. Where on Earth is the justice in that?

So, this has been one of my most ‘personal’ songs of the week in 2009, and perhaps it’s the most poignant too. But do you agree with me?
