Alexia Coley

Has music always been a passion of yours?

Definitely, music's always been in my life. I have an early memory from my 4th birthday. As I was blowing out the candles, I wished "when I'm older, I want to be a successful singer".

What is it that led you to this career path?

My beloved mother was in the original cast of the groundbreaking musical Hair. She even sang whilst pregnant with me on TV shows and stage... there was nothing else I could have wanted to do but sing! I love music because of her, my biggest inspiration.

How does it feel to be releasing your debut album?

It feels great, but at the same time I'm very nervous about how it will be received. My lyrics are written from the heart... my truths and life experiences.

Tell us a little about the creative process behind this album.

I hear melodies in my head. They come whenever and wherever... I could be walking my dogs, at a party or even mid dream. My phone's never too far away, so I record what I hear then go back to it. Depending on what's going on in my life at that moment, I write. I find it very therapeutic, it helps me get through bad experiences and appreciate the good. The music arrangements get put together afterwards, with a co-writer. I tend to hear a bass line first, then I have an idea of what the instruments should be playing.

Where do you draw influence and inspiration?

Mainly from my Mum. I also love Otis Redding, Ella Fitzgerald, Billy Holiday, Randy Crawford, Etta James, Sugar Pie DeSanto. There are so many amazing artists - I could go on and on.

What should we expect from your sound?

I love Motown and Stax, Rhythm and Blues to mix it all up.

If you could work with anybody going forward, who would it be and why?

To name a few I'm a fan of Paul Epworth's work, Dani Castelar, Lack Of Afro and my label mates Ephemerals. Quincy Jones would be amazing as he could teach so much from his life experiences. A duet with Paulo Nutini because I love his raspy voice, and finally, Bruno Mars.

What do you think of current-day popular music?

There's some great songs being written produced and released.

You were signed by current label Jalapeno Records after playing Big Chill Festival, what was that experience like?

The festival was exciting and nerve racking all at the same time. Once it was over, I was on a natural high. It was my first ever festival and I didn't know what to expect. I am very happy I did it - otherwise I wouldn't be in my current position.

Do you have a definitive aim for your career?

I just want to get my songs out there and heard as much as I can. My family have a restaurant so when I'm not singing I help run it - otherwise, I just want to create music and sing full time.

What should we expect from you going forward?

I'm currently negotiating my next album! So expect more songs and recordings. I want to keep it moving and hope to reach the goal of my 4th birthday wish. Onwards and upwards!
