FemaleFirst get one-on-one with Amy Dickson to chat about her career so far, what we should expect going forward with her new album and more in an exclusive interview.

Amy Dickson

When did you first begin playing the saxophone?

When I was six years old.

What is it about music that drew you to beginning a career in the industry?

I always knew that I was going to be a musician - there was never a moment of realisation for me - it all happened gradually and naturally. It's just a part of who I am and I can't imagine doing anything else.

How difficult was it to push yourself into the spotlight and become a recognised saxophonist?

Again, it has all happened very gradually and naturally. There has, of course, been a lot of hard work though!

You're releasing a new album in June, what can you tell us about that?

The new album is called A Summer Place and is inspired by the beautiful, sumptuous elegance of summer in the 1960s - with a nod to Mediterranean glamour.

Why did you choose these specific songs included on the album for this record?

The pieces of music which we chose to adapt all seemed to capture the essence of the theme and we ended up including quite a few film themes, which were particularly atmospheric.

How does it feel to be the world's leading classical saxophonist?

Music is such a subjective thing, I wouldn't ever want to claim that title, but it it is certainly very gratifying to hear that people appreciate my music.

What have been some of your career highlights to-date?

I think my favourite concerts have been at the Sydney Opera House. I grew up in Sydney, dreaming of playing there one day, so whenever I play there it is hugely exciting. Being honoured with the Classic BRIT Award for Best Newcomer was also a fabulous moment.

Who would you like to work with going forward?

I could write a book listing the people I dream of working with! I consider the best part of what I do to be the opportunity to work with talented musicians. Collaborating with others really is a very exciting process.

Amy's album ‘A Summer Place’ is out on August 25.
