Shirin

Upcoming British singer/songwriter Shirin isn't your average plucked-from-Britain makeshift popstar, but in fact an advocate in bringing back the world of Glampop to the mainstream scene.

After an invite to perform for Clive Davis and record with Darkchild, Shirin has managed to fuse her rock roots with the pop introduction she was met with, resulting in her debut EP 'Good Girls Always Surrender'.

We got the chance to put some questions to Shirin before her inevitable boom into the world of super stardom. Check out what she had to say below.

How best would you describe yourself as an artist?

I'm passionate, animated, dynamic and cheeky.

When did you realise music was a career you wanted to chase?

I knew from about the age of 2 that I enjoyed performing and bringing happiness to a room full of people but I was about 6 when I declared that I was going to be a popstar when asked what I wanted to be when I grew up by an older school pupil. I don't think they were expecting me to come out with such a bold statement.

What is it about music that you love?

I love that it has the ability to transport you. It can bring back memories, emotions feelings, or it can create new dimensions within your imagination. It's something everyone engages with, and it has the power to unite people.

Where do you draw influence from as an artist?

I love strong female figures such as Stevie Nicks, Joan Jett, Debbie Harry and Annie Lennox, but I'm also inspired by the works of Tim Burton and Danny Elfman.

If you could work with anyone going forward, who would it be and why?

I'd just love to produce a concept album with musical composition by Danny Elfman and Visual Direction by Tim Burton. It would have so many dimensions to it... I get excited just thinking about it!

What would you note as some of your career highlights to-date?

Singing for Music Mogel Clive Davis in his suite at the Beverly Hills Hotel. Working with Rodney 'Dark Child' Jerkins, and being blessed to travel to new places whilst creating music.

Tell us about the creative process behind your debut EP 'Good Girls Always Surrender'.

I knew I wanted to take a different direction with what was happening in music currently, so I would only listen to artists like Joan Jett and my favourite classic albums. I avoided listening to the radio, and I just let my mind lead me. It was a very visual experience for me,I felt like I was painting out the music videos in my mind as the lyrics and melodies were coming together. Most of all I really had fun with this EP, and I didn't hold any of that emotion back.

How important is it for you to have creative control over the work you release?

It's 100% important. I always have a clear path in my mind, and most importantly I let my intuition guide me. I've ignored it in the past and I've learnt to listen to myself in recent times. If you have control over what you release you have more control over the outcome, and it will fulfil you.

What should first time listeners expect from this EP?

It's full of twists and turns, with sweet and sour attitude packed into every song. It's zesty, vibrant and energetic.

What other hobbies do you have besides music?

I really enjoy a variety of fitness such as weight lifting, sprint training, hiking and rock climbing. I also love cooking, and spending time with my adorable family.

Finally, what should we expect from you in the coming months?

I'm about to embark on a tour in the Far East with my band. We'll be playing in China, Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines, South Korea and Taiwan to begin with which I'm super excited about. I'm also writing on the road for the debut album so any suggestions on what to call it?
