A wannabe record producer in Los Angeles has received hate mail after releasing an album featuring music written and performed by convicted mass murderer Charles Manson.

People say they don't understand why I'd want to associate myself with this or why I would be interested in releasing it

Manuel Vasquez struck up an odd friendship with Manson, who was sentenced to life behind bars in 1971, and agreed to rework his material for a new release, which the budding mogul is selling at the boutique he runs with fashion designer girlfriend Rio Warner.

Vasquez tells the Los Angeles Times he has sold about 200 copies in six weeks, but the album has brought him some unwanted attention from people who are opposed to him profiting from the recordings of a convicted killer.

The 26 year old says, "I've gotten some hate mail from it. There are people not appreciating the release of music by him. People say they don't understand why I'd want to associate myself with this or why I would be interested in releasing it".

Vasquez admits even his own parents tried to talk him out of releasing the album, which he funded using donations via website Kickstarter.

And he confesses that Manson's music and poetry isn't for everyone.

He tells the Times, "I don't think there was ever a chance for mass popularity of his music. Most people won't like it. It probably requires an acquired taste".
