Dire Straits’ 1985 song Money for Nothing has been edited for Canadian radio after it was ruled that its original lyrics are "too offensive" to play.

The Canadian Broadcast Standards Council (CBSC) began censorship discussions last year after a listener complained over the song's use of the homophobic slur, f****t, three separate times.

CBSC officials have now ordered radio stations to use an edited version of the song, explaining societal values have "shifted" since the track first hit airwaves 26 years ago.

A spokesperson tells TMZ.com, "The broadcast of the song in 2010 must reflect those values, rather than those of 1985."
