Phil Spector

Phil Spector

The star is currently serving 19 years to life behind bars following his May 2009 conviction for the fatal shooting of actress Lana Clarkson at his Alhambra, California home in 2003.

His lawyers returned to Los Angeles Superior Court on Tuesday to fight for the return of the huge legal fee, which Spector paid to criminal defence attorney Robert Shapiro before his arrest in 2003.

Spector had hired Shapiro, who previously represented O.J. Simpson, as his first legal counsel and he bailed the producer out of jail.

Spector later parted ways with the high-profile attorney and went on to be convicted of second-degree murder after standing two trials.

He is demanding a refund for the representation fee, while Shapiro's legal team argues the payment is non-refundable.

However, Judge Malcolm Mackey ruled on Tuesday that Spector's case should be heard by a jury and a trial date has been set for March.
