There is an abundance of great music being produced in Scotland every year and I hope that this new award helps us celebrate it and share it

Rockers Mogwai and KING CREOSOTE and Jon Hopkins are among the acts competing to have their records named Scottish Album of the Year (SAY).

Bill Wells and Aidan Moffat, Twin Atlantic, FOUND and Mungo's Hi-Fi arealso in the running for the inaugural prize - billed as the Scottish version of the U.K.'s prestigious Mercury Music Prize.

The winning act will receive $32,000 (?20,000) from the Scottish Music Industry Association (SMIA).

Mogwai star Stuart Braithwaite says, "There is an abundance of great music being produced in Scotland every year and I hope that this new award helps us celebrate it and share it".

The final winner, to be selected by a panel of 10 judges, will be announced at a ceremony in June (12).
