Dave Navarro has led tributes to the late Scott Weiland.

The Jane's Addiction guitarist posted a tribute to the Stone Temple Pilots frontman after it emerged he died in his sleep last night (03.12.15) aged 48.

He wrote on Twitter: "Just learned our friend Scott Weiland has died. So gutted, I am thinking of his family tonight."

It is not yet known what caused Scott's death but a statement on his Instagram page says he died in his sleep.

It reads: "Scott Weiland, best known as the lead singer for Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver, passed away in his sleep while on a tour stop in Bloomington, Minnesota, with his band The Wildabouts. At this time we ask that the privacy of Scott's family be respected."

Several other names from the world of music have also paid tribute to the former Velvet Revolver frontman, who leaves behind two kids, Noah, 15, and Lucy, 13, and his wife Jamie Wachtel.

Motley Crue's Nikki Sixx tweeted: "Sad to hear about Scott's passing.I hope it wasn't drugs.The saddest part of the story is his kids and family being left behind. RIP (sic)"

Former Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic wrote: "Really sorry to hear about Scott Weiland."

Blink 182's Travis Barker tweeted: "Very sad news, rest in peace #ScottWeiland #toosoon (sic)"

Vanilla Ice posted: "Tell me it's not true - Scott Weiland found dead... Stone Temple pilots (sic)"

Ryan Adams tweeted a link to Stone Temple Pilots song 'Sour Girl' and added the caption: " RIP Scott Weiland

"Universe, please take care of him (sic)"

Early reports suggested Scott - who has two kids, Noah, 15, and Lucy, 13 - was found dead on his tour bus last night while touring with his group Scott Weiland & The Wildabouts.

According to TMZ, the rockers were due to perform at the Medina Ballroom in Minnesota last night but the show was cancelled.
