The 'Borders' hitmaker has finally been able to give fans some idea of when to expect her eagerly-anticipated follow-up to 2013's 'Matangi' and has teased that the record is "happy" album whilst also tackling survival.

In a video Q&A hosted on her Periscope, she said: "[I realised] you can make a record that's happy about surviving and not constantly talk about fight. At the end of the day, I feel like - maybe this is totally gibberish to everyone - but it's probably better to remind people about survival than it is about the moment you go to battle. Because that's just a moment."

The 40-year-old rapper-and-singer also talked about her a song, which she had planned on using a Disney sample on, but has instead decided to use her own song to avoid getting into an legal trouble.

Talking about the record, which was originally called 'Matahdatah, she said: "It's got 12 songs. I had to take the Disney thing off. I put 'Galang' on it instead, I sampled myself. I wanted to say, 'Whatever, I can't get Lion King, I'm gonna use my own song! That way no one can stop it."

During the video, in which she is in a car travelling to the studio for the final time, she also talks about wishing to collaborate with Skepta, Grimes and Rihanna.

Fans had no idea when to expect the album as M.I.A - whose real name is Mathangi 'Maya' Arulpragasam - revealed she didn't know if her record would be released as she was having issues with her visa and she was even tempted to leak the collection of songs unofficially.

She previously said: "I would love to leak it. I wake up every day and think I'm gonna leak it."

The album title is also yet to be confirmed.
